Broadcast Electronics is putting several transmitter-site functions into its MTX Compact FM platform, introduced around the October 21–22 NAB Show New York.
BE lists the compact range from 25 watts to 1,000 watts. Optional features include Stereo Tool audio processing, MicroMPX audio transport and an Inovonics FM and HD Radio tuner for translator feeds or confidence monitoring.
The manufacturer also lists a browser-based HTML5 control interface, monitoring and logging functions, and a traditional remote-control interface. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent RNN equipment test.
The practical station question
Putting processing, transport and reception inside the transmitter could reduce separate equipment, wiring and rack-space requirements. Whether that produces a lower total cost depends on the options purchased and the station’s existing installation.
Engineers comparing systems should request an itemized configuration, including software options, support, replacement parts and delivery. They should also establish how quickly the station can restore service if an integrated component fails.
The Radio News Now question: Does combining more functions in one chassis simplify recovery as well as installation?
BE promotes the platform’s efficiency and compact construction. Those claims should be evaluated against the intended operating power and actual site conditions.
