Cumulus Media plans to introduce geographically targeted advertising on WXLO-FM in the first quarter of 2027, giving the Greater Boston station a way to carry different commercials in different parts of its coverage area.
The company’s October 30 announcement identifies Aktira’s ZoneCasting as the technology behind the planned deployment. A zone east of Route 128 would receive selected advertising while listeners outside it continue hearing the primary broadcast.
Radio World reports that WXLO, licensed to Fitchburg, Massachusetts, already operates a synchronized booster network. The rollout is planned, not an already operating Boston service.
Cumulus also intends to use insights from Xperi’s DTS AutoStage alongside the advertising system. Connected-car listening information and geographically targeted transmission perform different jobs; neither alone demonstrates that an advertisement produces a sale.
For advertisers, the practical question is whether a smaller geographic buy can reach relevant customers at a useful price. Stations evaluating the approach should examine coverage boundaries, reception during transitions and campaign reporting before promising results. The announcement does not establish those outcomes.
