Atlanta’s Smooth Jazz 101.1/100.1, WJZA, moved a community food giveaway ahead of the traditional Thanksgiving period, putting the focus on households needing help before holiday drives begin.

The October 17 event provided groceries to more than 200 families, according to Radio Ink’s October 26 report. The participation figure is attributed to that report; RNN did not independently count recipients.

The station’s event announcement identified the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs as the Atlanta location and named Georgia Power and Mabra Law as supporters. It placed the giveaway within Davis Broadcasting’s 40 Days of Service, marking the company’s 40th anniversary.

Greg Davis Jr., the company’s vice president and Atlanta market manager, told Radio Ink the change was intended to help bridge periods when fewer organizations are distributing food. Families’ needs, he explained, extend beyond Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A practical expression of local radio

The programming lesson is about timing as much as promotion: a station can use its local relationships to identify a service gap and organize partners around it. The event’s audience or advertising effects have not been established.

The RNN question: How can stations and community partners sustain assistance between their most visible annual drives?
