Universal Music Group has named Òscar Celma senior vice president of Applied AI and Machine Learning, adding a veteran of Spotify, Pandora/SiriusXM and Condé Nast to a senior technology role focused on artificial intelligence.
UMG announced the appointment Monday and said Celma will help lead the development and application of artificial intelligence and machine learning across the company’s global labels, divisions and businesses.
Celma brings more than two decades of experience in music discovery, recommendation systems and personalization. At Spotify, he helped lead work on AI-powered listening products including AI DJ, Jam and Daylist. His background also includes roles tied to Pandora/SiriusXM and Condé Nast.
The move is another sign that major music companies are building internal AI capabilities not only around rights, licensing and policy, but also around product development, discovery, personalization and business operations.
For radio and digital-audio companies, Celma’s background is especially relevant because recommendation technology increasingly shapes how listeners discover music across streaming platforms, connected devices and personalized audio products.
UMG said the appointment is effective immediately.
