WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned from the White House “effective immediately,” accusing the organizations of false reporting and warning that additional outlets could follow.
Trump repeated the announcement during an Oval Office event but did not identify any specific reporting behind it or explain whether the action revoked credentials, barred journalists from the grounds or removed the organizations from press-pool rotations.
The practical effect remained unclear Friday afternoon. CNN journalists reportedly continued working from their White House workspace, and a CNN team remained assigned to the television pool traveling with Vice President JD Vance.
A ban based on an organization’s coverage would likely face an immediate First Amendment challenge. CNN successfully challenged the 2018 revocation of correspondent Jim Acosta’s credential. A separate court dispute continues over restrictions imposed on Associated Press journalists after the organization declined to adopt the administration’s preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico.
