Sinclair Broadcast Group has eliminated positions inside the shared newsroom serving WOAI-TV and KABB-TV in San Antonio, adding another local television market to the industry’s continuing contraction.

The cuts occurred September 9. Sinclair confirmed that a “small number” of jobs were eliminated from the stations’ content center but declined to identify the positions or provide a total, according to reporting by MySA.

WOAI, the market’s NBC affiliate, and KABB, its Fox affiliate, share newsroom resources. Sinclair said the decision was intended to improve efficiency and long-term sustainability while allowing the stations to continue delivering local news.

The unanswered question is reporting capacity

Because Sinclair has not disclosed the number or types of jobs eliminated, viewers cannot yet determine whether the reductions affect reporters, photographers, producers, assignment staff, digital personnel or other newsroom functions.

That distinction matters. A shared newsroom already asks one operation to serve two stations with different network affiliations and programming schedules. Additional reductions could affect breaking-news response, enterprise reporting, community coverage and the number of journalists available in the field.

The San Antonio changes follow Sinclair’s August elimination of two morning-anchor positions at CBS Austin. Other Texas television newsrooms have also reduced staff during the past two years.

What Sinclair should disclose

  • How many positions were eliminated at each station?
  • Which newsroom functions were affected?
  • Will either station reduce locally produced newscasts?
  • How many employees now produce content for both WOAI and KABB?
  • Will the stations replace any eliminated work with centralized or automated production?

There is presently no direct evidence that automation caused these specific layoffs. The confirmed story is narrower: jobs were eliminated in a shared local newsroom, and the owner has not provided enough detail for the public to measure the effect on local service.
