Mark Thompson will continue leading Cable News Network, or CNN, as chairman and editor-in-chief under Skydance, the combined company expected to take effect October 6 following the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
The leadership announcement came October 5. According to CNN’s report, Thompson will report to Skydance Chief Executive David Ellison and Co-Chief Executive Ynon Kreiz.
In a memo to employees, Thompson said discussions with the incoming owners gave him confidence that they would support the network’s editorial independence and digital strategy. He also acknowledged that details of CNN’s operation within the new company remained unsettled.
The announcement signals continuity at the top and does not indicate an immediate merger of CNN’s newsroom with CBS News. It leaves longer-term questions about staffing, budgets and shared operations open.
CNN’s report also describes a merger settlement requiring a five-member editorial-independence board overseeing the two news organizations, with six months allowed for appointments.
The RNN question: How will editorial independence work when newsroom priorities, corporate budgets and ownership interests collide?
The practical test will be who controls reporting decisions, how disputes are resolved and what protection journalists receive when coverage draws pressure.
