CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — One of radio’s longest-running syndicated morning programs is preparing to end its traditional affiliate distribution and build its next chapter directly with listeners.

NOW! Media has notified affiliates that Bob & Sheri will conclude its terrestrial-radio syndication on December 31. The program plans to continue as a direct-to-consumer brand, extending the audience relationship it has already developed through digital audio, social platforms and its own online presence.

The show began in Charlotte in 1992 and entered national syndication in 1996. Bob Lacey retired in January 2025, while Sheri Lynch continued leading the program with its established ensemble.

A distribution decision, not a retirement

The December change does not mean the program is ending. It means the company will no longer depend on the traditional relationship in which local stations clear the show, sell local advertising around it and provide part of its reach.

Lynch said research from Edison Research, Sounds Profitable and Jacobs Media helped inform the decision. The bet is that a recognizable program can own more of its audience relationship through podcasts, subscriptions, applications, direct advertising and other products that do not require a station affiliate in every market.

That strategy also carries risk. Broadcast affiliates provide daily promotion, habit and local availability without requiring a listener to download an application or choose a paid product. Direct distribution gives a program more control over customer data and presentation, but it also makes the program responsible for discovery, customer acquisition, technology and retention.

What radio should watch

The industry will be watching how much content remains free, whether former affiliates can maintain any digital relationship with the show, how local advertising is handled and whether subscriptions can replace revenue that previously came through syndication.

The transition could become a useful case study for other established personalities. If Bob & Sheri can convert broadcast familiarity into a durable direct audience, it would demonstrate that syndication is no longer the only route to national scale. If the conversion proves difficult, it will underline how much value stations still provide through repetition, local promotion and easy access.
