Chaka Khan will receive the Classic Soul Honor at the 2026 Soul Train Awards, BET announced October 22.
The November 27 ceremony will air on BET and simulcast on CBS for the first time, expanding the program’s distribution to broadcast television. The CBS arrangement was announced in September; Khan’s selection is the latest development.
The recognition connects a major soul artist’s legacy with an opportunity to reach viewers beyond the awards program’s established cable audience.
For music programmers, the announcement provides a timely opening for coverage of Khan’s recordings and influence. A useful segment can connect the music to its history while giving listeners a reason to explore beyond familiar hits.
Expanded television distribution does not by itself demonstrate that younger viewers will discover an artist or return to the catalog. Those outcomes will need evidence after the telecast.
The RNN question: Can expanded distribution create lasting discovery beyond one awards-night performance?
