WATERLOO, Iowa — NRG Media has agreed to sell its Waterloo-Cedar Falls radio cluster to Cedar Basin Media, an affiliate of Civic Media, marking another major change in the regional broadcaster’s portfolio.

The pending transaction includes KFMW, KOKZ, KPTY-AM and KXEL-AM, along with associated translators. A purchase price is expected to become public through the Federal Communications Commission filing.

The agreement has not yet closed and remains subject to regulatory approval.

A HOMETOWN EXIT

The Waterloo operation carries special significance for NRG Media because it is based in the company’s home state. Once NRG’s pending transactions are completed, the company’s remaining stations are expected to be WCMY-AM and WRKX in Ottawa, Illinois.

For Civic Media, the agreement represents an expansion into Iowa after building a network centered largely in Wisconsin. The buyer has emphasized local programming and community engagement across its existing operations, but listeners will be watching for specific decisions about staffing, formats, news coverage and local management.

WHAT LISTENERS AND EMPLOYEES NEED TO KNOW

Until the sale closes, NRG remains the licensee and operator. Announcements about future formats, personnel or programming should be treated as plans rather than completed changes.

The transaction also arrives during a period when many radio groups are consolidating management, selling smaller clusters or concentrating investment in fewer markets. That can create opportunities for regionally focused operators, but ownership changes are ultimately judged by what remains local after the paperwork is complete.

RNN will follow the Federal Communications Commission application for the final purchase price, any station-by-station terms, local marketing agreements and the expected closing schedule.

Important questions include whether Cedar Basin Media will retain current employees, how much locally produced programming will continue, whether the stations will share content with Civic Media’s broader network and what investments are planned for news, sales and technical infrastructure.
