Howard Stern’s satellite-radio footprint became smaller on September 1, even as his program prepared to reach a much larger global video audience.

SiriusXM’s new channel lineup removes Howard 101, the second channel long used for Stern-related programming and archives. Howard 100 remains on Channel 100. Radio Andy, led by Andy Cohen, moves from Channel 102 into the former Howard 101 position, while several comedy channels also shift numbers.

Separately, HBO Max says it will begin releasing weekly filmed adaptations of The Howard Stern Show worldwide on Thursday, September 17. Each installment will be built from Stern’s SiriusXM program and may include additional material. The arrangement involves HBO Max, SiriusXM and The Howard Stern Production Company.

A contraction and an expansion at the same time

The two moves illustrate a central change in modern radio: a major audio franchise may occupy less space on its original platform while gaining distribution on a global video service. Howard 101’s departure is a contraction in dedicated satellite capacity. HBO Max is an expansion in reach, format and potential audience.

That does not establish that Stern is leaving SiriusXM. The company’s official lineup still places Howard 100 at Channel 100, and HBO Max describes its show as an adaptation of the SiriusXM program.

What remains unanswered

  • Where the programming and archives previously carried on Howard 101 will be available.
  • Whether all archival content will move to Howard 100, the SiriusXM app or another on-demand collection.
  • Whether the HBO Max edition changes the live audio schedule, production cycle or subscriber access.
  • How advertising, sponsorship and audience measurement will be divided between the audio and video versions.

For terrestrial and internet-radio operators, the lesson is larger than one celebrity contract. Personalities who can generate interviews, video, clips and subscription value are increasingly treated as multiplatform intellectual property—not simply as hosts filling an audio daypart.

RNN analysis

Howard Stern is losing a dedicated SiriusXM channel while gaining worldwide video distribution. The meaningful story is not “radio versus television.” It is how a valuable radio franchise is being reformatted for every screen without completely abandoning its audio home.
