Canada’s Copyright Board has approved Re:Sound royalties that separate nonprofit radio simulcasts from other eligible online streams through 2029.

The tariff published October 31, 2026 sets an annual C$36.50 charge for simulcasts in 2026–2029, plus a separate C$36.50 for non-interactive or semi-interactive streams other than simulcasts. An eligible service offering both categories therefore owes C$73 annually, before taxes. Each category is C$25 annually for 2020–2025.

Eligibility depends on nonprofit ownership and operation, even if advertising helps fund the service. The tariff covers specified sound-recording and performers’ rights; it is not a price for every music right a station may need.

Commercial radio, national public broadcasters, on-demand streams, downloads and podcasts are excluded. The separate over-the-air charge remains C$100 annually for 2022–2029.

For operators, the practical distinction is between an unchanged, simultaneous broadcast stream and a separate online service. The tariff requires a service description with payment and sets January 1 as the annual payment deadline.

Canadian Legal News reported October 30 that the approved terms followed negotiations with community and campus-radio associations, replacing substantially higher proposed online charges.
