MOSCOW — Novaya Gazeta announced October 30 that it is ending its remaining operations in Russia, with its servers scheduled to shut down November 9.

In a statement published on its website, the independent newspaper said it would leave its longtime Moscow premises and publish one final issue. It attributed the closure to pressure from Russian authorities and security services, saying it had lost its office and access to its reader-donation platform.

Reuters also reported the impending closure and said Russian authorities had not immediately commented. The newspaper described the pressure as a coordinated campaign.

Founded in 1993, Novaya Gazeta had stopped its Russian print edition in 2022 but continued producing online journalism. Agence France-Presse independently reported the closure announcement and the earlier revocation of its media license.

The announcement concerns the Moscow-based publication, not the separate Novaya Gazeta Europe, established in Latvia by former staff members.

The statement does not specify how the publication’s online archive will remain accessible after the server shutdown.
