IBC Project Tests Whether Technology Can Make Television Dialogue Easier to Hear

AMSTERDAM — Broadcasters, researchers and audio specialists are demonstrating “Crystal Clear,” an IBC Accelerator project focused on improving speech intelligibility in television and media.

The group includes the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Sky, Fraunhofer, the Audio Engineering Society, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, RNID, the University of Salford and Shure. The project combines automated analysis with structured human listening, while keeping trained professionals responsible for the final judgment.

The practical test is whether the work can help viewers understand dialogue across different programs, devices and listening environments without flattening creative sound design.
