Spotify and Genius are bringing complete episodes of the performance series Open Mic and the lyric-explainer series Verified to Spotify, extending the service’s move beyond audio recordings and conventional music videos.

Open Mic features stripped-down artist performances. Verified gives artists room to explain lyrics, themes and the creative process behind individual songs. New Open Mic episodes are scheduled for Thursdays, while Verified publishes on Wednesdays and Fridays.

A release now needs a story around the song

For labels and independent artists, the partnership reinforces a larger change in music promotion. A recording increasingly competes inside an environment that also rewards performance footage, lyric explanations, interviews and other material that helps listeners understand the person and story behind the song.

Spotify says the two Genius series have accumulated more than 3.7 billion combined views historically. That number reflects their performance across earlier distribution—not 3.7 billion views generated on Spotify—and should not be used as a forecast for the new partnership.

The important questions concern access and results. Genius and Spotify have not yet explained in detail how artists are selected, whether independent acts can submit material directly, what production support is provided or which audience data participating artists receive.

More than a promotional clip

The strongest episodes can function as independent programs rather than short advertisements for a recording. A compelling performance may introduce a song to people who have never streamed the studio version, while a lyric explanation can deepen the relationship with listeners who already know it.

That creates a practical strategy for developing artists: test the song first, then invest in the visual or explanatory format most likely to extend interest. A strong recording does not automatically require every possible piece of content, and weak audience response should not be hidden behind an expensive video campaign.

Spotify’s deal with Genius places that artist storytelling closer to the moment of listening. The next test is whether the platform gives emerging performers meaningful access to the shelf rather than concentrating visibility among acts that already have major promotional support.
