Lionel Richie checked himself into a St. Louis hospital after his Saturday, Aug. 29 performance at The Muny, according to reporting confirmed by a source close to the singer’s tour.
ABC News reports the hospitalization was precautionary. People, citing TMZ’s initial reporting, said the 77-year-old entertainer was admitted to intensive care while doctors evaluated possible dehydration. Richie’s representative had not publicly confirmed the ICU or dehydration details as of publication. A source close to Richie’s tour told Rolling Stone the singer is OK.
Concertgoers said Richie requested a chair while closing with “All Night Long.” The hospitalization follows a June incident in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he felt dizzy onstage, ended his performance early and postponed two shows before returning to the road.
Richie is next scheduled to perform with Earth, Wind & Fire at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Sept. 26. That concert had already been rescheduled following Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris’s medical emergency.
