iHeartMedia has appointed Kashon Powell as Vice President of Programming, where she will oversee a portfolio of key Chicago stations including Adult R&B V103 WVAZ, Hip-Hop 107.5 WGCI, News BIN 640 WMFN, and Gospel Inspiration 1390 WGRB. Powell will report directly to James Howard, SVP of Programming.
Powell brings a wealth of experience to the role, most recently serving as VP of Programming at Radio One, where she led programming efforts in Washington, DC and Baltimore. She began her tenure there as Program Director of Majic 102.3 WMMJ and eventually became Operations Manager and Executive Producer for Urban One Honors.
Her radio career began in 1992 at 97.9 The Box KBXX in Houston, where she rose to Program Director. After a stint as Urban Editor at Radio & Records, she joined iHeartMedia’s WDAS-FM/WUSL as APD/MD and was soon promoted to Program Director. Powell later served as Director of Urban Programming for iHeart stations in Norfolk and Richmond, VA.
“I’m excited to return to iHeartMedia to lead these legendary brands and contribute to the legacy of such an iconic radio station,” said Powell. “A huge thank you to James Howard, Thea Mitchem, Brad Hardin, and Doc Wynter for this incredible opportunity.”
James Howard added, “Kashon has an exceptional track record of success, consistently driving results and inspiring teams. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the Chicago team. Her leadership will be instrumental in deepening our connection with listeners.”
Powell steps into the role previously held by Derrick Brown, who served as Vice President of Programming since 2009. Brown had been at the helm of WVAZ since 2007 and also held key national positions, including National R&B Brand Coordinator and Director of Programming & Brand Strategy for iHeart’s R&B, Classic Hip-Hop, and Gospel formats.
