Switzerland’s public broadcaster SRG plans to restart its first FM transmitters in mid-November 2026, supplementing digital reception after ending FM distribution at the close of 2024.
In its November 2 announcement, SRG said its renewed frequency authorization is legally effective. The initial network is expected to cover about 80 percent of the population. SRG puts the additional annual cost at approximately 6.5 million Swiss francs.
The decision follows Parliament’s support for extending FM. SRG says the return gives listeners more time to adopt digital reception; its DAB+ and Internet services remain available. Nau’s November 2 report also confirms the planned restart.
For Internet radio operators, the useful question is how to help audiences change listening habits without losing access. RNN’s analysis: maintaining a digital service does not by itself ensure every listener can comfortably use it. This decision does not establish that streaming failed or quantify an effect on independent stations.
The restart is planned, not completed. SRG says any further expansion will depend on listening behavior and operational and financial considerations.
