BOULDER, Colorado — Smaller public-media organizations can begin preparing applications for a program intended to help them rebuild their operations after the loss of federal funding.

The Public Media Bridge Fund’s Pathways to Sustainability application opens October 20 and closes November 19. An online information session is scheduled for October 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern, or 1 p.m. Mountain.

Announced October 6, the program pairs eligible organizations with coaches to develop operational and financial plans. Participants can subsequently apply for funding to carry out identified activities; implementation awards are not automatic.

Budget ceilings are $2 million for radio-only licensees, $5 million for television-only licensees and $7 million for joint licensees. Applicants must also meet the program’s other requirements, including qualifying for Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding as of September 30, 2025, and providing a unique local service.

What should success look like?

Shared services, engineering improvements and new revenue approaches are among the fund’s areas of interest.

The important outcome is whether assistance leaves an organization with a workable operating model and meaningful local service. A balanced budget achieved by hollowing out local reporting would answer only part of that challenge.
