NEW YORK — CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways, ending Romo’s nine-year run with the network and making J.J. Watt the continuing analyst on CBS’s lead National Football League broadcast team.

CBS confirmed the change Friday. Watt will remain alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson for the rest of the 2026 NFL season. The network said its other announcing teams will remain unchanged.

Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback who became CBS’s lead NFL analyst in 2017, had been on leave since a July 23 arrest in Wisconsin. He pleaded no contest on September 1 to a civil charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. CBS had described his leave as indefinite before announcing the separation.

In a statement released Friday, Romo said he plans to take a break and focus on his health and family before considering his next opportunity. CBS thanked him for his contributions and wished him well.

The immediate change settles CBS’s top NFL booth for the remainder of the season, but the network did not disclose the terms of Romo’s departure or say whether Watt’s assignment extends beyond the current season.
