KMXC–Mix Country 106 ended its full-time Internet radio stream September 30, closing its continuous broadcast operation while preserving the station’s brand, website and content archive.

The independent station specialized in Texas country, Red Dirt, independent artists and traditional country music. Its original operation began in 2009, and the current version launched in March 2022.

Mix Country 106 said it has discontinued its syndicated programming and will no longer participate as a reporting or monitored station for music charts and industry panels. Promoters, labels and artists were asked to remove KMXC from active-station and music-servicing lists.

From a continuous station to an on-demand brand

The name will not necessarily disappear. The operators said the website may continue carrying occasional artist interviews, podcasts and special projects. The station has already preserved programs, personalities, charts and other material in an online archive.

The transition provides a useful case study for independent Internet Radio. A continuous stream requires programming, music licensing, automation, hosting, reporting, promotion and around-the-clock operational attention. An on-demand model can preserve recognizable programming and audience relationships with a different cost structure.

Mix Country 106 has not disclosed its audience figures, operating expenses, advertising revenue or the specific reason it ended full-time broadcasting. Its decision should not be attributed to royalty costs, streaming-service price increases or insufficient audience without direct confirmation.

The unanswered business questions

The strongest follow-up is an interview with co-owner Odie Lofton: What did it cost to operate the station? Which expenses grew fastest? How much listening occurred through directories, apps and the station website? Did advertising or sponsorship cover the operation? What made on-demand publishing a better path?

Those answers could help other independent broadcasters understand whether the change reflects one station’s circumstances or a wider sustainability problem for small Internet Radio operations.
