NEW YORK — New podcast research is reinforcing a lesson radio programmers have known for decades: the personality behind the microphone can be more durable than the platform carrying the show.

The Podcast Study 2026 reports that 82% of respondents who have a favorite podcast say the host is either a major part of the reason they listen or the only reason. The study also found that 88% spend at least half of their podcast listening time with one favorite program.

The host is also part of the advertising value

The study found that host endorsements performed strongly on several advertising measures. Fifty-seven percent said a host endorsement makes them more likely to remember a brand, 44% said it increases trust in the ad, and 41% said it makes them more likely to consider purchasing the product.

It also tested a possible subscription model built around host-read advertising. Forty-five percent said they were at least somewhat likely to pay for a tier that removed other ads while retaining host reads.

The research was conducted by Strategic Solutions Research and Point-To-Point Marketing and presented at the Sounds Profitable Business Summit. Crooked Media, NPR and PRX co-sponsored the study, an important disclosure when interpreting findings involving host-read advertising.

For radio programmers, the study is another reminder that talent development remains a strategic asset. Music, information and distribution can be duplicated. A trusted host with a distinct relationship to the audience is harder to replace.
