SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA — Roku is adding a live, personality-driven weekday sports program to its free channel, another sign that free ad-supported streaming television is moving beyond libraries of recycled clips and older programs.

Pregame with Matthew Berry debuts Monday on the Roku Sports Channel. Matthew Berry and Michelle Beadle will host the two-hour program live from noon to 2 p.m. Eastern, joined by former college quarterback and creator Mo Hasan.

Berry’s Fantasy Life company is producing the show. The planned content includes fantasy sports, the National Football League, betting, pop culture and interviews with newsmakers.

Roku wants a daily appointment

The show enters the time period previously occupied by The Rich Eisen Show before Eisen returned to ESPN and Disney+. Beadle and Berry are retaining other professional roles, including Beadle’s work with FanDuel TV.

The larger experiment is whether a free streaming channel can use a live daily program to create appointment viewing. Roku already controls the device interface for a large connected-television audience; the new program gives it original content designed to bring viewers back at the same time each weekday.

The first performance measures should include live viewership, replay consumption, advertising load, audience retention and traffic generated for Fantasy Life. Roku should also clarify whether viewers can watch the program outside Roku devices and how its audience reporting compares with conventional television measurement.
